Week 22: Morro Bay
March 8, 2021
We did a hike in Montana de Oro today for Preparation Day, and it was pretty rough for about 3 miles uphill, and then easy for three miles downhill. There were a few people who got mad at us for not wearing masks on the trail, but that's kind of just the nature of the times. We did some Facebook afterwards and then gave a blessing to Sister Fishman. She's awesome, and so is her dog, Chester. We also got our Corolla switched out for an Equinox today, and it's totally a soccer mom car, but it drives like a dream. I'm excited to meet the new people in our district, because Elder Crow and Elder Haroldsen left. I think Elder Strauss and I were really the only companionship that actually hoped we would stay together this last transfer haha.

Today was a productive day, we did some service for Jeremy, and he's a really cool guy. He actually has three brothers, just like Elder Strauss and I. He's really nice, and he actually got pretty excited when we told him we'd love to come back later and teach him more about Jesus Christ. After that, we studied, and then went park contacting. Then we had another delicious dinner, courtesy of Elder Strauss. We went contacting again after dinner, because it's starting to be lighter outside, and we were able to place a Book of Mormon to someone who seemed interested in checking it out. It was a good day, and we are ready to meet the rest of the missionaries in our district.

We had a district exercise today with our new district and got to know some of them better. We do have four sisters in our district, and so we can't go too crazy with our morning exercises. After that, we did some service that was building a tough shed. We got about halfway done in 45 minutes, so we decided we'd finish it real quick. After two and a half hours of service, we were pretty beat, and so were our brains. We did some contacting, but could hardly find anyone to talk to, and we did a lot of Facebook because our visit with the Boyette's cancelled. So we're pretty beat.
Also, I ran over a possum on the freeway because I thought our Equinox was high enough to clear it, but it wasn't. It might have survived, but we'll see tomorrow.

Today was really rainy, and we did some service for Stacey again, running through a virtual downhill river in a storm to take her trash up the street to the dumpster. My t-shirt and shorts didn't do so well, but it was kind of fun. After we did some studies, we did some contacting and got into a little bit of a Bible bash with a preachers son, but it ended well and he was cool, we'll teach him later. After that we did Facebook until a member visit with the Elms, so it was another solid day. We also got to teach Karmen and McKenzie today, and they are awesome and have been progressing well. We can't meet very often, but we'll take by some cookies and a KJV Bible or something, Karmen said that Mosiah 2:17 really resonated with her, and we told her that's the Spirit. She has really good fellowship with all the sisters in the ward, so that has been a huge help.

We pretty much had our day planned out for us today, which was actually kind of nice. We had district council, and a mission-wide spring cleaning, and by then it was 4:00. After contacting and dinner, we had a ward drive-by ice cream thing that we were able to bring Dan and Daniel to, and Rebekah Boyette, and they hit it off really well with the members. After that we did a Ward Mission Coordination zoom call, and then we had a member visit with Sister Allen, and our day was over. I brought home this cool Bible from 1947 that has all of Christ's words in red, and instead of the sides of the pages being gold or silver, they are red. I also brought home a book called 'Missionary Pal' which is pretty much a tool for bashing. But I'll try to not use it that way. They were just some extra books that somebody found in the Church from a long time ago, so I'm claiming them for my own.

Today was interesting, we slept in past our alarms, so we missed our district activity this morning. Then we did service for Joni and cleared out her bedroom and office so they could put in some new carpet. Then we had lunch and went back to move it back in.
Later we had a lesson with Donald, who just got out of the hospital from a double break in his femur. The way he broke it was his neighbors, they're Jehovahs Witnesses, invited him to a little service they were doing, and the first step he took out of his door he fell and broke his femur in two places. If that's not a sign, I don't know what is. Then we went over to Joni's again, to help her look for a card that got lost while we were moving stuff. We must've spend about 3 1/2 hours there today, but that's all right, she needed the help.
After dinner, we had a lesson fall through with Jeremy, because he said he was super tired and so we just shared a scriptural thought with him over the phone. After some Facebook, we went to the Loran's house for a visit, but they forgot we were coming, so we offered any kind of service, and they asked if we could do their dishes. I was thinking there was no way I was going to touch somebody else's nasty dishes, so I instantly started thinking of excuses to get out of it. But Elder Strauss jumped right in, the champ that he is, and did the dishes while I talked to them, which was great because we're trying to teach Brother Lovan right now, because he's not a member yet. So I definitely learned a lesson from Elder Strauss today.

Donald doesn't have a smartphone or a computer, or a way to watch church over Zoom, and so we watched it with him on my phone, and it was awesome. Donald is so great, he's going to get baptized as soon as he can get his femur healed. Apparently it was a double break, which is crazy.
After that, we made some BBQ chicken for lunch, and then had a lesson with Tony. Tony's a beast, he really has his head on straight and knows the gospel well in terms of connecting the Bible to the Book of Mormon. We think he could have baptismal date in the future if things keep going the way they have been. After that we did a whole lot of contacting, because it's daylight savings, and then did a visit with the Olson's. Also, we scheduled Elder Strauss' haircut for tomorrow.
Sam you are an awesome missionary. I completely enjoying your entries and pictures. What a life!! You make me miss Ca. The scene of you on your porch really takes the cake. I love the view. You are in a better area than I first thought you were going to be in. It sounds like you are doing great! I am sure your mom and are very proud of you. Love, Sister Burkey. I want my driver back.
